How does different flora convey separate interpretations? My art is about emotions and how we can use plants to communicate. Many plants have different spiritual and social meaning in the world. I wanted to explore plants that didn’t have a mainstream emotion, and craft a narrative around what they could represent.
Using research, I was able to use different Pacific Northwestern found greenery to show my feelings. The art here is a culmination of my different thoughts and emotions while here in school. Being able to put my anxiety and nostalgia in my art, helped me get through hard times.
I chose specific plants that grow in the Pacific Northwest for this project because I wanted to connect to the place I grew up. Using different flora from where I’m from, makes me feel more connected the nature I lived near. Being able to live near forests and vegetation allowed me to craft my imagination about what could be out there. In a way, it helped me grow into the artist I am today.
I decided to use watercolor and oil paint as my main tools to help portray the different interpretations of plants and fungi. Watercolor helped me loosen up the way I was painting and portray fluid movements. Oil paint on the other hand, allowed me to softly blend and created a warm fuzzy nostalgic feeling for my child hood. These mediums allow me to craft specific scenes that work with this series.
